Get Travel Insurance: A Reality Check in the Dream

Getting into the necessary nitty grits of travel.

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS. PLEASE READ MY DISCLOSURE FOR MORE INFO

The truth is many people don’t think that it’s that important but rather feel like Travel Insurance is a nice to have. I, on the other hand, am an uncoordinated, depth-challenged individual, or in layman’s terms and as most of my mates know me as – awkward.

Tripping over my very own feet on any given occasion is an actual probability when walking, never mind running! I’ve visited numerous emergency wards for completely ridiculous Klutz induced episodes! It’s literally too ridiculous to make up.

So before even looking at my new backpack or the pro’s and con’s of the new DSLR, OR even flights, the first order of business for me was Travel Insurance. I scoured (not with a pot scraper no); I utilised my keen Google friend to scan the interweb! I chatted to friends. And then took to fellow travellers about the good, the bad and the better of travel cover.

Besides being covered by comprehensive health insurance (yes) – being me – I decided to venture into the field of Travel Insurance to find out if there was actual merit in all the promotion. Just in case.

Step 1. Getting Really Real about Travel Insurance

The really real reality is…
a) You don’t ever know what might happen while travelling (Klutz or not), and
b) (And what they don’t tell you) Most health insurance plans don’t cover everything when you travel.

So the challenge for me then was finding Travel Insurance which covered any injuries or illnesses but also covered the stuff I’d be travelling with. AND any accidents that may materialize, or even any trip cancellations that may happen.

I’d heard tall tales of an insurance company covering one or two of these possibilities, but all three?! That would mean unicorns do exist?! *insert rainbow emoji here*

Step 2. Ponder Replay

When I started really thinking about it, I realised that actually, yes! Travel Insurance shouldn’t only be about seeing a doctor while in a foreign country, but more so about falling down a hillside (like I’ve managed at home) AND knowing the GoPro you lost while racing to catch the final bus of the day can actually get replaced – at zero cost.

So, these were things I began to think about:
What if I get sick and need to see a doctor.
What if I need to get helicoptered out of somewhere.
What if I need to be sent home.
What if my electronics break or are stolen (touch my noggin not).
What if I need to cancel my trip.
What if my stuff is stolen (touch my noggin not).

These questions had me on a long hard think. But like most of us know, travelling can be costly. Especially when you’re on a budget, the thought of any kind of insurance can be… How shall I say it? Painful?!

But, then it was like rainbows came out of nowhere! I found out Travel Insurance didn’t need to cost the earth. And it could be super simple to get (and renew if I wanted – online). *insert unicorn emoji here*

Step 3. Experience Proves Useful

I do like to take advice from seasoned travellers and those “in the know”. Matt Kepnes, from Nomadic Matt, is just one of those stalwarts of travel that I’ve followed for years and of a few, value his advice greatly. So it was a bunch of research and a few rather nightmarishly convincing (no Travel Insurance) stories later, I came to a fast rule. I will NEVER (and you shouldn’t) leave home without Travel Insurance again!

The thing is, only a few bucks per day, will ensure you won’t be forking out extra money if something goes wrong. But the no-brainer is – if something goes wrong, (especially in Euro’s or USD) it’ll save you thousands!

My advice then is simple. Be more like Nike, and “Just do it”. Get cover (whichever you decide on) before roam comes calling (yes that was intended).

I personally decided on World Nomads for my travel insurance for my travels and below are 7 reasons (numbered in order) why.
